The Phalaropes: an unusual pair

The male phalarope is not the showy or more colorful of the pair. Rather it is the female that catches the eye, and she is the ‘defender’ as well as the flirt.  After mating she looks for another partner. It is the male who serves as domestic caretaker and offspring minder.
